This paradigm shift puts the traditional BPM tools in jeopardy. Though they are advanced, feature rich, but they are very complex as they were built in the era of – “only software professionals can access them”.

In the current heavy competitive market, businesses don’t have the waiting time & bombing budgets for the traditional BPM tools. Most of SMB customers don’t need 98% percent of features that traditional BPM tools are offering as those processes got to be automated. Very few exceptions, around 1% have extremely specialized and complex processes that traditional tools can support with complex flows. So, traditional BPM tools no longer have life in current ever changing business markets

Here are common pit falls and baggages that traditional BPMs carry

Consume lot resources
After installing the tool on-premise with a dedicated server space, customer should put lot of effort to make it usable.

  • Internal IT teams spend lot of time to configure, monitor the infrastructure to make sure it’s running all the time.
  • Dedicated maintenance and management team to run the regular patch updates, bug fixes
  • Training team to educate users on the usability and understanding of the feature set

Horrible in look & feel
We are in era of complete UI make over happening in every 2 to 3 years. uglyCustomers (Gen-X and Gen-Y) are expecting the same behavior from the existing tools no matter when they got developed.

In the past, customers were fine with change of their business process according to functioning of a tool. Whereas present day businesses can’t afford do that as efficiency is key element for their survival.

Cost is huge
Traditional BPMS spent & developed features that 99% of the customers don’t need it at all.  They need high experts to maintain, manage and running this huge functionality. All this cost is transferred to the customers, though they don’t need it. Customers are not only end up paying the one-time cost for the software, but also recurring charges in – maintaining (Development team), monitoring (IT team), and managing (BPM experts).

End result – the price is huge for customer even for minimal usage.

Dead slow
Though all traditional BPM tools are installed on-premise and serve the customers one-on-one basis, still they are slow

As all the tools needs continuous maintenance and adding resources as and when the data size grows. If the customers don’t do it, it gradually slows down in terms of responses.

No integrations with tools in customer premises
As a business process enabler, it has to integrate and communicate with lot of tools sitting in the organization. As BPM tools were developed long back, they lack the integration hook points to collaborate with other tools in customer premises.

This one thing increases burden on business users doing the repetitive tasks in multiple tools. This manual effort leads to inconsistency of the data and frustration in the organization, bringing down their end user satisfaction.
